Adult Sizetinkerbell Suitcase

Day 8.
second day of our stay in Uppsala began by exploring the Museum Gustavianum. Our guide was a lady museum's director, Ing-Marie Munktell. Gustavianum is one of the oldest and most beautiful buildings of the University and the largest museum in the region. It was established in 1620 and for many years served as the main university building. At the beginning we went to Anatomiska Teatern. It was there that the famous Olof Rudbeck conducted the autopsies. Hall was to be the assumption of the classroom for students of medicine, but as the number of students was several times smaller than the number of people that could accommodate a theater, opened it for a fee to a wider audience. Anatomiska Teatern was inspired by a similar theater in Leiden in the Netherlands. In comparison to other such halls, a theater in Uppsala has excellent lighting, which takes a round, glazed dome.

The exhibition "Valsgärde. Vendeltid - Vikingatid ", which presents the results of archaeological work in the outdoor Valsgärde Viking grave. This tomb is an example typical for small-scale Viking burial. Another exhibition, we had a chance to see it "Augsburgska konstskåpet" devoted a great rack donated to the 1632 Augsburgom by Gustav II Adolf. Cabinet was distributed in various ways, and its many drawers and shelves, concealed are tiny works of art reflecting the contemporary knowledge. Their number is estimated at 1,000 copies. It is these items can be viewed at the exhibition.

Gustavianum After leaving we went to the university library-Carolina Rediviva. We met there with Krister Östlundem, who showed us to a rich collection of the library.

Carolina Rediviva founded in 1620 on the initiative of Gustav II Adolf and care was taken from the outset that, by virtue of its unique collections could compete with libraries of other powers in Europe. The royal family then had a huge and valuable collections therefore had to recruit workers who will look after them. The largest part of the oldest collections of libraries comes from the royal donations. Over the years, the library came new works, including religious writings that were placed there during the Reformation, after elimination of the Catholic monasteries, and collections taken up during the wars, with the Polish. We were pleased to see such "Statute of Laski", from 1500, which provides the first printed version of "Mary". We also saw a hand painted panoramas from Krakow and Warsaw with "Civitates orbis terrarium. It is also worth mentioning the "Poland kungars saga och skald," which includes portraits of Polish kings and stories about them. Interestingly, the author built the Latin equivalents of names of rulers, such as "den tredje Boleslaus Crivoustus (Boleslaw Wrymouth). The library collections in Uppsala are available to all, including the old ones, which can be used in the reading room.
Then we saw an exhibition devoted to the oldest works, which are held by libraries. The most valuable collections, among innymmi Silver original copy of the Bible ("Silvern Bibeln ") which is written on parchment made from the Goths skróry unborn calves, the New Testament version of the fifth century. In other collections, which prompted us to wonder, was the first map of Scandinavia showing, a Carta Marina, a collection of Nordic sagas - "Edda." Unfortunately we were unable to see "Gustav Vasas Bibeln," which temporarily located in the renovation.

Carolina Rediviva the building went to Domkyrkan (Uppsala Cathedral). We had the honor of being shown around by the art historian Torbjörn Fulton, who told us the story of a great cathedral. Plans to build the cathedral were created already in the 1258th But it was only in 1435 was devoted Domkyrkan by Olaus laurentii. In 1702 the great fire destroyed much of the city, not sparing the cathedral. After the fire started renovation work, during which lost its Gothic cathedral charkater to classical. These changes proved to be unstable, since in the years 1886 to 1993 it was decided to return to the original style of the cathedral. The cathedral-style shows influences of French Gothic, for example, round mosaic located at the tomb of Gustav Vasa, a true copy of a mosaic in the Cathedral of Notre-Dame. During the tour we saw, among others tomb Gustav Vasa and Jagellonska kapellet. The tomb is decorated with four columns that have shaped pyramid and reflects przypomniają to the tombs of the pharaohs. Jagellonska kapellet is also the burial place of Catherine's Jagiellonian and her husband John III. Wall above the tomb is decorated with panoramic view of Katherine of Krakow.
